Managing Sensory Challenges During Halloween: A Parent's Guide

October 2023

Halloween is supposed to be a fun, family friendly fall holiday - but sometimes it can come with unique challenges with navigating it with your autistic child. Take a breath - you got this! Below are some suggestions to managing sensory challenges for your child while still participating in festivities.

  • Adapt the costume: If your child is dressing up, think outside the box to adapt the costume to something more comfortable for them. Printing images onto a comfy shirt (instead of wearing a stuffy costume top), having a mask they can hold (instead of one they have to wear over their head), or minimizing the number of loose costume pieces might be helpful.

  • Take breaks: There's no rule that you need to power through an event. Slow down and take breaks from the event as needed.

  • Make it social: Invite 1, 2, or a small group of familiar friends to join your child at the event. You can prep them on how they can help your child and make it fun for everyone.

  • Be picky with your events: With so many different events all over Orange County, choose ones you think your child will enjoy!

  • Create your own: If there's nothing suitable, create your own Halloween event! Painting pumpkins, Halloween scavenger hunt in your backyard, Halloween themed games at the park... the possibilities are endless!
